Almost every day of my life, I talk to people who’ve been accused of crimes and are trying to avoid conviction. In many cases, the person ends up hiring me, because I’m good at what I do. In plenty of other cases, the person has a valid reason for choosing another attorney. Every once in a while, however, following my free, initial consultation, I’ll get a call back from someone saying something along the lines of: My uncle has a friend who’s an attorney, and I think he’s going to help me out as a favor to the family. This is a terrible idea.
